Bungie are looking to bury another major character in Destiny 2 and all the omens have been confirmed recently.
Interestingly enough, the last time Vanguard had three alive leaders was three expansions ago. Bungie then issued the sidearm called Spoiler Alert and if you looked at this lore, the description simply said "Somebody is going to die". That turned out to be Cayde-6 when Forsaken launched so when the devs reintroduced the gun in the last season of Beyond Light, people started asking questions.
Destiny 2 community is usually quick to pick up on mysteries and theories but they were somewhat kept in the dark for a while and we're not just talking about Vex hacking our day out. Bungie let the players ponder the meaning of the Spoiler alert but eventually confirmed what everyone suspected - it wasn't reintroduced randomly. Some really is going to get killed.
Games Radar recently had an interview with the Destiny 2 narrative team where they asked directly whether reissuing the sidearm was a coincidence, to which senior narrative designer Nikko Stevens replied negatively.
Stevens' reply was short and concise, simply noting the gun's reappearance was not a coincidence but he also stated he is not going to say any more than that. After all, there isn't much fun to be had in the things we know everything about.
Destiny 2 is currently going through the longest season so far since The Witch Queen was postponed into 2022. It's quite possible no one will bite the dust until then. When it does happen, our money is on Osiris.
