Xur mistook the incoming holiday for Christmas last week, resulting in Destiny 2 players keeping him hostage so everyone can grab his high-quality offerings.
Destiny 2 community sometimes produces odd situations and this time around it was the most wholesome hostage situation ever. Since these situations are not wholesome normally, it's quite possible this was the only one in the history of mankind as well.
Anyway, the hostage situation arose when people decided Xur's True Prophecy hand cannon, which rolled with Explosive Payload and Rangefinder, was too good to miss out on. This combination of perks makes the weapon effective at virtually any range in PvP and since it flinches people to kingdom come, pretty much anyone stepping into the Crucible wanted it.
That's when the community stepped in and people manipulated Destiny 2's mechanics to make Xur stay much longer than intended, way past the point of Tuesday's weekly reset. They did this by staying in the map with Xur, who can't despawn before everyone leaves a map instance. As long as one player is in it, Xur will stay and sell his wares.
As long as one player was around , those who couldn't visit the weekend store in time could still pop into the map and buy the weapon. Eventually, it ended up being sort of a hostage situation as Captain Tentacle couldn't return to wherever he usually stays.
The effect was felt through the community and countless players kept thanking the hostage-taker for giving them the opportunity to grab the hand cannon with one of the best rolls around.
