Bungie's former employees were not only caught by surprise when it came to mass layoffs but also exploited in the process.

Bungie, the company behind Destiny 2, recently laid off 100 people who were caught by surprise as they received the message about "an important meeting" mere hours before the implosion happened.

The timing was so condensed that some of the employees didn't even get into the "meeting" to be told they were out of a job and instead got the news via email.

While that sounded like a layoff blitzkrieg, the kicker are the employee benefits, which only last until the end of the current month at the time.

The big "meeting" happened on October 30, 2023, meaning the employees had only one day of benefits left after receiving the bad news. At least health insurance will last for the duration of the severance.

Speaking of which, the severance will reportedly go for about three months after the termination but just when it looked like there is a silver lining to the whole ordeal, the matter of unvested shares happened.

Owning unvested shares of a company means that you will get their benefits after a certain period of time. If you change companies or breach contract in some manner, you get nothing. For some reason, people who had unvested shares in Bungie signed a contract that stated they would lose them even if let go through no fault of their own.

This is exactly what happened and they lost those shares simply because the company downsized. If you are wondering what prompted the downsizing, Lightfall expansion seems to be the main culprit.

The company missed the revenue target by 45 per cent which is massive and since the expansion was so bad we called it cursed, it is not hard to see why the revenue stream dried up.
