Relic Entertainment is working on Age of Empires IV

Despite never being truly gone, the Age of Empires series and its spin-offs have been absent from mainstream gaming scene for almost 12 years. Microsoft has now announced that Relic Entertainment is developing a full fledged sequel for one of the defining games of the RTS genre.

Microsoft has announced that a new entry to the Age of Empires series is being developed by Relic Entertainment. Little is know about Age of Empires IV, beyond what can be seen in the announcement trailer. It looks like the game will cover a larger time period than any of the previous entries.

"We can’t wait to tap into our strengths as a studio to fuse historical context with deep strategic gameplay, and to bring this franchise back to the forefront of gaming and into the hands of its beloved community", Relic Entertainment wrote in a .

Relic Entertainment will be the second Sega-owned studio to work on developing a real-time strategy game for Microsoft, with the first being Creative Assembly for Halo Wars 2.

Preceding this announcement, Microsoft revealed that they will be releasing definitive versions of all the previous Age of Empires series entries, starting with the first game of course which was confirmed a few months ago. Age of Empires: Definitive Edition is commencing beta testing today. You can still try and if you are feeling lucky enough to maybe get in.

The first in the series of three definitive editions will release on 19 October 2017, right on time for the original game's 20th birthday.

The development team has made some minor changes and improvements to the game, like pathfinding that works more often than 5 per cent of the time and increased population limits, along with a generous graphical update.
