Beloved studio Relic Entertainment who are best known for critically acclaimed real-time strategies like Company of Heroes 3 and Age of Empires 4 are going independent.
Relic Entertainment were a subsidiary of Japanese publisher Sega who decided to sell the studio as part of their restructuring reform. Sega today also announced they are cutting 240 jobs across Creative Assembly, Sega Europe and Sega Hardlight.
In the official statement, Relic Entertainment confirmed that they will become an independently-run studio thanks to an external investor. Interestingly, the studio did not name who the investors are.
"We have an important announcement for our players and fans. With an external investor, Relic Entertainment will become an independently-run development studio. This is a huge change for us, but one thing does not change: we want to create amazing experiences for our players," Relic stated in their message.
In addition, Relic Entertainment said they will continue to support their games including Company of Heroes 3 which is getting a 1.6 Update in April with new content.
Judging by the statement, there is no bad blood between Relic and Sega as the studio very clearly state that while they are out of the Sega business, they will remain friends and colleagues.
At the moment, it looks like Relic won't have any major layoffs which is always a positive but it remains to be seen if there is any downsizing in the coming weeks as this usually happens with such big changes.
We sincerely hope that Relic will find success as an independent studio as they've built some of our favourite strategies ever in the Company of Heroes series, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War and Age of Empires 4.
Relic Entertainment were part of Sega since 2013 when THQ sold the studio to the Japanese organisation. Since then, Relic released four major strategies, including Company of Heroes 2, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 3, Age of Empires 4 and Company of Heroes 3.
