Starfield - How to fix crashing on PC?
Despite being the most optimised game Bethesda ever made, Starfield can still crash here and there
Despite being the most optimised game Bethesda ever made, Starfield can still crash here and there

Starfield appears to be one of the best Bethesda games ever in terms of optimisation but you can still encounter a bug here and there and a couple of crashes to desktop.

Starfield is finally out, if you have the early access sorted out, and some players have reported that the game is crashing to desktop on PC in certain scenarios like when using elevators or getting to New Atlantis.

If you're also encountering this problem, there are some potential fixes that you can try until Bethesda release the official patch. Before you try these fixes, keep in mind that none of them are guaranteed to work as every PC is different.

Starfield PC crashing fixes

Below, you'll find five different ways to fix crashing in Starfield. Before you try any of these, we suggest you try some standard fixes like lowering your in-game graphics settings, which can take a lot of load from your GPU, which sometimes can cause crashing. Also make sure your CPU and GPU are not overheating.

Cap your framerate

Many players are reporting that capping your framerate in the game stooped the game from crashing. Nvidia users, you can cap your frame-rate by going to Nvidia Control Panel, then Manage 3D Settings, where you should find Max Frame Rate option. Set it to 60 FPS.

AMD GPU owners, you can cap your frame rate by going to Gaming section in Adrenaline Software where you'll find option called Radeon Chill. Turn it on and set your max FPS to 60.

Turn off FSR

Players are reporting that turning off AMD Fidelity Super Resolution is fixing their crashing issues. Try doing that through the in-game menu and see if this helps. Obviously, this solution is not perfect as FSR helps boosting your FPS but it's still better than having constant crashes.

Starfield is finally out but as with every new release, some issues have started to surface

Turn of dynamic resolution

Another in game setting that can potentially cause crashes or at least that's what players are reporting. Dynamic resolution option can be found in the in-game menu so try switching it off and testing if you still encounter crashes.

Turn off Steam, Discord overlays, MSI Afterburner and similar apps

Many PC players love to use MSI Afterburner overlay to track the game's performance but some games don't like any of these overlays and can crash often if you use them. Make sure to turn off Steam, Discord and Xbox overlays and close MSI Afterburner and then test the game for crashing.

Update your drivers

This one should be pretty mandatory if you're playing a brand new game. Both AMD and Nvidia released fresh drivers for Starfield which improve performance and perhaps fix a crash or two. Make sure your drivers are up to date before playing the game.

At this moment, these are the fixes that can be helpful in some cases. We will be updating this guide with more potential workarounds as we and players all around the world discover them.
