Solving puzzles in Layers of Fear, Bloober Team's latest psychological horror, becomes more and more difficult as you progress through the game's story.
During the second act, the one located on the ghost ship, you will find yourself in a situation where releasing rats from small cages will be required to progress through the story. Releasing one rat located inside the room with two X-ray monitors will be particularly hard because the game doesn't give you any hint at all.
If this particular part of the game is giving you a headache like it did to us, our guide is here to help you.
How to release a rat in X-ray monitor room
Once you enter the room, you will see two X-ray monitors on your left, the work desk on your right, and a scale with a chest full of gold on it in the middle of the room. The other side of the scale will be empty, and in order to balance it and unlock the rat cage, you will have to put two mannequins' body parts on it.
That much you've probably already figured out on your own, but which body parts? That's a million-dollar question, but fear not; we have the answer. The hint on which parts to put on the scale can be found if you observe two little figurines, one located on the desk and one between two monitors.
The one on the desk is pointing something with its left hand, hinting that you must pick the mannequin's left hand, and the one between monitors is leaning its head on the floor, meaning you have to choose the head as the second part.
Approach the monitors, and on one of them, choose the left hand, and on the other, choose the head. After you do that, a short cutscene will be triggered, and the cage that is located beneath the desk will unlock. Open the cage and follow the rat to continue with the story.
Note that freeing this rat (lost soul) will not be required to progress through the story; six is enough, but if you free it, you will unlock the Se7en Seas trophy/achievement for saving all the lost souls.
