World War Z was a major but short-lived success at launch, taking the gaming world by storm with its rise and fall. The developers, Saber Interactive, praised Epic Games Store as their biggest platform where the majority of the sales went.
World War Z launched on 16 April 2019 to some rather impressive numbers. It even beat League of Legends to take a spot in top three most viewed games on Twitch on that day which prompted Sergey Galyonkin to pull a failed PR stunt by boasting inflated numbers .
His tweet didn't age well. Not even into the second day of World War Z's launch. The game took a nosedive , barely staying in top 10 most viewed games on 17 April 2019.
Still, Galyonkin's hype may have been prompted by huge day one sale numbers since it's hard to believe anyone actually purchased World War Z after the reviews started rolling in.
Matthew Karch, the CEO of Saber Interactive, stated that Epic Games Store proved to be the biggest digital platform for the game with around 700,000 copies sold on PC alone. The claim is rather interesting since Karch also mentioned that World War Z sold "well over two million copies ".
At first glance, the numbers don't add up or a market share anomaly happened where consoles had identical sales which allowed PC to come out on top with roughly 35 per cent of all sales. Equal console market share in this scenario would have happened despite PlayStation 4 absolutely dominating the console market when compared to Xbox One.
In reality, Karch attempted to obfuscate full statistics through semantics. He praised EGS due to leading the digital sales, but had to confirm that it was, in fact, PlayStation 4 with the largest number of total sales once they accounted for the consoles' physical sales.

Therefore, no market anomaly was in play here, it's simply an attempt at a PR stunt to flaunt Epic Games Store's digital sale numbers.
Revenue split and potential bonuses for exclusivity make it easy to see why developers and publishers are encouraged to work with Epic but attempting to obfuscate reality through hiding actual statistics is not a good way to do it.
