Developer Massive Entertainment have confirmed they are working hard on The Division 3 with ambitions to match the cultural impact of the franchise's debut entry, according to franchise head Julian Gerighty. "The Division 3 is in production; this is not a secret. It's shaping up to be a monster," Gerighty stated in the New Game Plus interview. "We're working extremely hard on something that I think will have as big an impact as The Division 1 was." As a massive The Division fan, this is music to my ears.
The bold statement carries significant weight for Ubisoft, which has struggled with underperforming releases and internal restructuring. The Division 3 could represent a crucial title for the publisher's recovery, potentially delivering the blockbuster success needed to stabilise the company's future.
However, fans shouldn't expect the game soon. The Division 3 remains years away from release, with Massive likely in early production stages. We still haven't even got a teaser trailer which tells you all you need to know about the game's potential release date, sadly.
One thing everyone is keen on hearing is the city setting, of course. The community's biggest hope centres on returning to The Division's snowy New York setting. The original game's winter atmosphere created an incredibly immersive post-pandemic experience that distinguished it from competitors. The Division 2's sunny Washington D.C. setting, whilst technically accomplished, lacked the oppressive, haunting tone that made the first game memorable.
Given Massive's technical proficiency demonstrated in recent projects, The Division 3 should rank among the best-looking games the studio has created. Massive's Snowdrop engine continues evolving with each release, and several years of development could push visual fidelity to impressive heights on current-generation hardware.
Whether Massive can recapture that magic remains uncertain, but Gerighty's confidence suggests the studio understands what made The Division special. For Ubisoft's sake, they'll need to deliver.
The Division 3 is in development for unannounced platforms.
