Outta nowhere, Korean publisher Wemade Max and developer Madngine have revealed one of the most impressive games you'll see this year. Codenamed Project TAL, it's an ambitious open-world action-RPG drawing from Korea's rich mythological traditions.
It's currently targeting a release in 2027 on PC and consoles and promises to reimagine traditional Korean Tal masks and folklore into a sprawling fantasy adventure.
The announcement trailer showcases high-octane combat where players can scale colossal enemies Shadow of the Colossus-style, targeting weak points while executing counterattacks and combo strings. Combat emphasizes momentum and aggression, with players leaping between opponents and chaining abilities to maintain offensive pressure.
What sets Project TAL apart from other, similar games, on the market is its companion system. The game allows you to have NPC allies who, according to the developer, can actively adapt to player tactics and environmental conditions.
Each companion brings distinct combat roles spanning defense, support, melee, ranged attacks, and magic. The trailer demonstrates some of that cooperative moments like catching falling allies mid-fight or companions deploying protective barriers against incoming attacks.
The devs aim to balance the emotional storytelling about restoring a fractured world with satisfying action-RPG mechanics. Wemade Max CEO Sohn Myun-seok emphasized the studio's ambition to deliver a globally competitive AAA title that showcases Korean culture and mythology on an international stage.
Project Tal Features
Beyond companion gameplay, Project TAL features climbing mechanics for monster battles, a weakness exploitation system encouraging tactical targeting, and fluid combo chains executed alongside AI partners. The emphasis on dynamic cooperation suggests boss encounters and large-scale battles will require coordinating with companions rather than treating them as afterthoughts. Sounds exciting, at least on paper.
