Microsoft has confirmed Developer_Direct 2026 will broadcast on January 22 at 10am PT / 1pm ET / 6pm UK, showcasing extended gameplay for two highly anticipated titles from Playground Games: Fable and Forza Horizon 6. The presentation marks the fourth instalment of Xbox's developer-focused showcase format.
Fable's First Extended Gameplay
Fable will get its first in-depth reveal during the broadcast, with Playground Games unveiling what Microsoft describes as "one of 2026's most anticipated titles." The showcase will feature extended gameplay demonstrating the reimagined fantasy RPG set in the fairytale land of Albion. Previously, we've only seen glimpses of gameplay.
Playground emphasised the reboot maintains core Fable themes including choice, consequence, drama, British humour, and chickens, reimagined for existing fans and newcomers alike. The segment promises to reveal "magic and mischief" awaiting players in this fresh beginning for the franchise, which last saw a mainline entry with Fable III in 2010.
The extended look should address lingering questions about combat systems, character customisation, and how Playground's expertise in open-world design translates to the fantasy RPG genre. Fable represents Playground's first non-racing project, making the gameplay reveal particularly significant for demonstrating the studio's versatility.
Forza Horizon 6 First Gameplay
Forza Horizon 6 is another major Xbox title that will get its first gameplay at Dev Direct. Expect to see the Japanese setting open-world across varied landscapes. Playground Games will deep-dive into new features whilst demonstrating how Japan comes to life in the latest instalment.
The Japan setting has been heavily rumoured for years, representing one of the most requested locations from the Forza community. The country's diverse geography, from neon-lit Tokyo streets to mountain passes and rural countryside, provides ideal terrain for Horizon's festival racing format.
Game Freak's Beast of Reincarnation
Game Freak, the legendary studio behind Pokémon, will provide the first in-depth look at Beast of Reincarnation, the one-person, one-dog action RPG set in post-apocalyptic Japan. The segment reveals protagonist Emma's plant manipulation abilities and gameplay alongside canine companion Koo.
The game was initially announced at Xbox Games Showcase 2024, but details have remained scarce so far.
Potential Surprises
Developer_Direct typically includes unannounced surprises beyond the confirmed lineup. Previous showcases featured shadow drops, release date announcements, and reveals of titles not mentioned in advance marketing. Microsoft's tradition of "one more thing" moments means the January 22 broadcast could include additional announcements.
One of the surprises could be Gears of War: E-Day, which is targeting a 2026 release date.
Developer_Direct 2026 broadcasts January 22 across Xbox's official channels including YouTube, Twitch, and Facebook.
