The Outer Worlds 2 has just gotten an official gameplay trailer as well as the release window of 2025. I don't know how are Obsidian doing it but they are about to launch two major first-person RPGs in a single year, barring any delays. Quite the feat.
The sequel to their small but great sci-fi RPG the Outer Worlds is bigger, prettier and has more weapons and gadgets according to the hilarious trailer narrator. Apparently, it took Obsidian three times longer to develop The Outer Worlds 2 than the first game.
In terms of the location and the story, everything looks familiar, perhaps even too familiar to The Outer Worlds. I have to say that I expected this one to be a proper upgrade now that Obsidian are under Microsoft's umbrella but it appears they still like to chug out smaller, more focused experiences instead of something on a grander scale.
In the official Xbox Wire blog post, the devs revealed that players will play as a "competent Earth Directorate agent" who needs to uncover the source of devastating rifts that are threatening the entire galaxy. Sounds intriguing enough, but in true Obsidian fashion, it's not everything that the world has to offer.
You'll meet different factions at war with each other and Obsidian namedrops some of them: benevolent rulers known as the Protectorate, a rebellious scientific religious order, and a corporate mega power that has the colony torn apart. I really can't wait to see how our choices can impact the faction war and if we can side with any of these groups.
One thing that you'll notice at the end of the trailer is the release platforms. Interestingly, The Outer Worlds 2 is coming day one to PlayStation 5, which suggests Microsoft are all but done with Xbox exclusivity. I wonder if Mr. Keighley had an award for the biggest letdown of the night? I'm sure Xbox fans would give that one to Microsoft.
In addition to PlayStation 5, The Outer Worlds 2 will also come to PC and Xbox Series X|S via Game Pass day one, as expected for an Xbox game.
