Sony have officially announced the acquisition of Housemarque, the developer of Returnal, Super Stardust HD, Dead Nation and other PlayStation titles.
Well, it finally happened. Sony have acquired Returnal developer Housemarque after many rumours suggested that the parties are in talks regarding a potential acquisition. Housemarque will join PlayStation Studios and work on PlayStation 5 exclusives from now on.
Hermen Hust, head of PlayStation Studios:
"Today I'm thrilled to welcome a new member to the PlayStation Studios family! I have been a fan of Housemarque since the studio’s early days when they introduced Super Stardust HD to PlayStation fans. Housemarque's recent release of Returnal proves the studio is one with incredible vision, capable of creating memorable new games that resonate with our community. This addition enhances the creative force of PlayStation Studios, and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for Housemarque."
Housemarque Co-founder and Managing Director Ilari Kuttinen said that the team are excited to join The PlayStation studios and cannot wait to show everyone what will be in store in the upcoming years.
"This gives our studio a clear future and a stable opportunity to continue delivering on gameplay centric approaches, while still experimenting with new methods of narrative delivery and pushing the boundaries of this modern art form," Kuttinen said.
Sony are also expected to acquire Demon's Souls developer Bluepoint Games to further expand their PlayStation Studios group.
It's safe to say that PlayStation's exclusives portfolio will be more diverse and exciting than even before.
