Matt 'Phroxzon' Leung-Harrison, League of Legend's Lead Gameplay Designer, recently highlighted the various changes that could be arriving in the mode, as well as the team's reasoning behind the choices it made on social media.
According to the post, Riot is evaluating these particular changes for Patch 14.9:
- Eliminations: We're moving first possible elimination from R5 to R6
- Augment Round: We're swapping the round that you get your second augment from R6 to R5
- Stat Shard Satisfaction: We're adding 500G to Stat Shard rounds to help people engage more with the item system later in the game
- Prismatic Anvils: 3750gto 4000g
Why did Riot suddenly decide to implement these changes?
The Riot chief noted that prior editions had "sweaty" lobbies with players continually skill-checking one another and a player base similar to LoL's ranked ladder. Phroxzon further stated that the mode's adjustments and future tweaks are designed to appeal to a more casual audience, similar to those who play League of Legend's more intense modes, such as ARAM and Normal matches.
How are the Riot developers handling the matter?
To deal with this, the developer intends to include additional chance components, as seen in one of their previous significant products, Teamfight Tactics.
Phroxzon said:
“Playing consistently for 1st will be more RNG than in previous versions of Arena. However, we still want Arena to be skill-testing enough that a better Arena player will be both higher rated and have higher average lobby placements than a weaker player in the same situation. Apt comparisons here would be Poker, TFT, etc; making the best out of the circumstances that you’re presented rather than being fully in control of them,”
These updates are currently being tested in the game's public test realm and might not be included in Patch 14.9, which is scheduled for release next week. However, it provides some useful insight into how Riot intends to make LoL Arena a permanent mode as well as what players can anticipate when it gets implemented to the game on May 1.
