In League of Legends or any skill-based multiplayer game, a major part of the gaming experience is showing off your tricks and style. And every Summoner has that one (or more) favourite champion that they main and are the best at playing.
Mastery Emotes in League of Legends have been the go-to way to showcase your skills, particularly after executing a challenging play on Summoner's Rift. People love to smap this emote both to show off and as an alternative to playful trash talking.
However, Mastery Emotes in League of Legends have retained the same appearance for several years, but Riot Games has recently revamped them, leading to mixed reactions from the community.
What is different about the new Mastery Emotes in League of Legends?
Instead of the traditional steel wings and central gem, the developers have reimagined Mastery Emotes with a more ethereal design, drawing inspiration from the peaks of Mount Targon and the magical energy associated with that area.
League's updated Champion Mastery system has revamped in-game emotes, replacing the older, regal design with a sleeker, shinier star-themed aesthetic. The wings still expand as you gain mastery, but instead of armoured gems, they now have diamond-like wings with a different coloured aura inside.
Additionally, the Champion Mastery system is no longer capped at level seven. The emotes reflect this change, with players who reach mastery level 11 and beyond receiving a crest that displays a continuously increasing number, demonstrating their dedication to a singular Champion.
How did the players react to this change?
Most players are dissatisfied with the new Mastery Emotes, claiming they appear cheap and lack the same impact and flair as the older versions.
For instance, here are some player reactions to the Mastery Emote change:
What did the developers say about the Mastery Emote change?
“We felt that the struggle of climbing the mountain was similar to the pursuit of mastery and wanted to reflect that in the new designs,” Evan “Revenancer” Humphreys said. “In addition to new looks for levels 1–7, we’ve added new crests for levels 8–10 and an infinitely scaling representation of your level beyond that.”
At first glance, the updated emotes seem to lack the animations found in their previous form, such as the flourishing wings, the afterglow, and other subtle visual effects. And yes, the players' reactions have some justification, as these emotes look too generic and gimmicky. All we can do is wait and see what Riot decides to do in the future.
