The League of Legends Pro League (LPL) is often considered the premier regional tournament worldwide. Most recent World Champions have come from the LPL, with JDG being the latest LPL team to win at MSI 2023, where runner-up BiliBili Gaming was also a Chinese team.
So if you are new to this or are unaware of how the tournament is structured and organised, then look no further as we explain how everything will work in this event by Riot Games.
LPL 2024 Summer Split Format In Detail
The upcoming summer split will use a modified format as opposed to the LPL's customary single round-robin best-of-three (Bo3) format.
According to the announcement, the regular split will be divided into four stages: group draw, fixed group, in-group, and “box-out” (unofficial name) stage. Here's what each stage means for the competition:
Group Draw Stage
The 17 teams in the LPL will be divided into 4 pools based on their performance in the Spring Split. Teams with home courts in the same arena will be placed in separate groups. The seeding for each pool is as follows:
Pool 1
- BLG
- TES
- JDG
- NIP
Pool 2
- FPX
- WBG
- LNG
- WE
Pool 3
- OMG
- IG
- AL
- LGD
- TT
Pool 4
- RNG
- RA
- EDG
- UP
Fixed Group Stage
Each group will play a double-round robin best-of-three (Bo3) in fearless draft mode. The bottom 2 teams from each group will be placed in Group B, while the top 9 ranked teams will go into Group A.
In-group Stage
After the groups are set, they will undergo a single round robin Bo3 using the regular "competitive draft" format. At this stage, the top 7 teams from Group A will move on to the playoffs, while the bottom 4 from Group B will be eliminated, ending their split.
Box-out Stage
The last two teams from Group A will face the top four teams from Group B in a single-elimination best-of-five (Bo5) bracket. The matchups are:
- 8th place Group A vs. 4th place Group B
- 9th place Group A vs. 3rd place Group B
- 1st place Group A vs. 2nd place Group A
The winners of each match will earn a spot in the playoffs and join the remaining 7 teams in the playoffs bracket. So get ready to cheer your favourite team on on this nail-biting Summer Split.
