League of Legends and Valorant players will have to be on their best behavior even off the game, as Riot Games has revealed its new policy that would allow the company to ban players upon misbehavior even when they are offline.
Riot traditionally punished players for activities like cheating, smurfing, account sharing, and toxic behavior within the confines of a game. The new rules call out that, for streamers and content creators, accountability extends outside of the game.
That means players can be penalised for actions or comments on live streams or other online platforms, even if those actions occur outside of the in-game environment.
For instance, if a streamer uses hate speech or any kind of foul words while streaming, Riot may impose sanctions as if the misconduct had occurred in-game.
This is mainly for streamers and influencers creating content around League of Legends and/or Valorant to ensure standards of the larger gaming community are upheld.
That said, Riot made it clear that the policy is mostly concerned with popular creators or influential streamers rather than the average player. The system will be report-based to deal with the most extreme cases, especially for those who would make the community toxic.
In severe cases, Riot can even remove partnership privileges or ban access to the games altogether.
Curiously, this policy extends across Riot's titles; someone misbehaving in Valorant might be punished in League of Legends and vice versa. While Riot says that this sort of cross-game action would be very rare, it does incentivize people to stay on good behavior across all games.
This new approach shows a real commitment by Riot to encourage a healthier gaming environment; whether it is effective, only time will tell.
