Riot believes the Honor System has lost its purpose and has become a "thing at the end of the season where you got free stuff for pressing buttons."

Riot Games has announced a major shake-up with League of Legends' Honor System: the Honor Shop and Honor Tokens will be removed starting January 2025, which marks a massive shift in how the system rewards good behavior.

League of Legends has been fighting the scourge of toxicity within its community for quite a long time now. Riot's testing different systems across the years has helped in order to actually foster sportsmanship. The most adored was arguably the Honor System. The system allows players to compliment teammates after matches.

Players that continually receive honors gain Honor Levels, with rewards like exclusive Honor Skins. Past Honor Skins include The Honors Malzahar and Three Honors Akshan; Three Honors Shen will be the final skin of 2024.

Riot seems to think it lost that point and devolved into "just a thing at the end of the season where you got free stuff for pressing buttons." It was always designed as a support for a community looking for good games.

But instead of being its support system, it ultimately just encouraged them. Because of that, the Honor Shop and Tokens are getting retired. Riot later followed up the message explaining the shop and tokens would go, while the Honor System stays-but not without changes-in Season 2025.

For one, Honor Levels will directly influence rewards and in-game social features such that the higher the Honor Level is, the more event pass experience high players gain, while features like all chat, post-game chat, and emotes are less restricted for them, whereas low ones are faced with limits.

Before the Honor Shop's permanent closure on January 6, 2025, all players will have a last chance to spend their tokens on unique skins. Remaining Honor Tokens after the date mentioned will be turned into 1,050 Orange Essence each.

So, this redesign is going to make the Honor System much more meaningful, matching Riot's broader work of rewarding good behavior and raising the bar for the League of Legends community experience.
