Viktor is one of the oldest champions in League of Legends and is getting a full VGU with patch 14.24; Riot Games wants to update his design and make it more modern with his Arcane-inspired lore and add subtle gameplay improvements.
First released in 2011, Viktor was unique among mages thanks to his patented ability evolution system: Prototype Hex Core allowed players to upgrade one of his abilities as the game went on. However, during preseason 11 Riot replaced this with Hex Fragments, letting Viktor evolve his abilities through stack accumulation instead of a dedicated item.
While Viktor has always been a pretty solid mid-lane pick, he seldom was the true dominant force in meta. His kit and visuals have aged relatively decently, but Riot felt it was time for a refresh, particularly after how heavily he featured in Arcane.
Viktor VGU highlights - LoL Patch 14.24
Here's what is going to change with Viktor's rework:
Ability names:
- E: Formerly his Death Ray is now renamed to Hextech Ray.
- His R, formerly Chaos Storm, is now Arcane Storm.
R evolution upgrade:
- When evolved, Viktor's R "Arcane Storm" sizes increase by 40%.
- It also gains an additional 3 seconds duration for every champion it damages that dies during the storm.
Although these updates aren’t a drastic overhaul, they offer fresh elements to enhance gameplay without altering his familiar mechanics. Riot aims to refine Viktor’s character design and lore rather than completely rework his playstyle.
When will Viktor's VGU finally arrive?
The rework is supposed to go live with Patch 14.24, scheduled to release December 11, 2024. The updated Viktor has gone live on the PBE, where players can now test his kit. Only the beginning of the update, as some tweaks can be expected toward the 2025 season.
