Asobo Studio isn't making the same game twice. With Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy , which is due August 27, 2026, the French developer has traded the series’ signature stealth-and-sling for parries, combos and a dual-timeline mystery that stretches back to Minoan Crete. A new seven-minute trailer gives us the clearest look yet at how that actually plays and it's safe to say that the title is not the only thing that's different.
Set 15 years before Requiem, this standalone prequel follows Sophia, the plunderer who acted as Amicia's mentor in the second game. She's younger here, fiercer and crucially, not interested in sneaking past anyone. The extended gameplay trailer shows a combat system built around precise parries, fast attack chains with a dagger and sword, and a grappling hook that yanks enemies into traps or off ledges.
It's a clear departure from Amicia's rock-and-sling approach. Where previous Plague Tale games punished open confrontation, Resonance seems to encourage it. Whether that works across a full campaign remains to be seen – the series has never done action at this scale – but the trailer suggests a rhythmic, almost Assassin's Creed-inspired flow to swordplay .
Playing Theseus in a dual-timeline story
But the strangest twist isn't mechanical but narrative. As Sophia explores the Minotaur's Island, she experiences flashbacks to the Minoan era – not as a passive observer but as the legendary hero Theseus himself.
The trailer hints at these sequences: brutal arena fights, different movesets and a shift in tone from survival horror to mythological action. According to the press materials, a "terrifying entity" links both timelines, separated by over 2,000 years .
Between the fighting, light-based puzzles and notebook-guided exploration are there to fill the quieter moments. The trailer doesn't show much of the rat swarms that defined the franchise – Resonance appears more interested in Greek myth than the Black Death.
