You can't kill this thing, and the game barely tells you how to dodge it either. Its gaze works like a vacuum cleaner, and the trick is learning not to feed it anything to find.

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, from Asobo Studio, brings back the series' signature approach to an unkillable threat, this time in the form of a creature you'll only meet fairly late in the game. As with the rats in previous entries, there's no fighting this one off, only avoiding it, and while the game gives you a tutorial or two, mastering the pattern takes more attention than that alone provides.

How the monster's gaze actually works

The creature announces itself as a pillar that grows upward in a random spot before the creature, a blue head trailing several tendrils, emerges from it. Its vision behaves like a vacuum, pulling in surrounding particles, and if any of those particles are blue, generated by your own fast movement, it traces them straight back to you. Staying still and out of its direct line of sight is the entire game here.

How to read its movement pattern

As soon as you spot a pillar forming, crouch and get to the nearest cover immediately. Watch where the pillar develops rather than the creature itself at first, since that tells you where it's about to appear. Once it emerges, hold still with something solid between you and its gaze. The creature repeats this cycle three times before the pillars dissolve into dust, which is your signal that it's safe to move again. When you do move, stay slow or crouched to avoid throwing off the blue particles that give you away.

How to survive a forced chase

At certain points, the game forces you to run rather than hide. Changing direction while sprinting won't shake the creature off, so don't waste time trying. Instead, look for gaps to jump, obstacles to slide under, and cracks to squeeze through, all of which slow the creature down and buy you the distance you need to get clear. Sometimes, running between the light sources is a legible strategy, but be aware that you must be very fast while doing it.

Where light actually helps

Standing near braziers or other light sources shields you from the creature's gaze, but don't rely on it for long. Once the creature starts pulling in particles nearby, exposed flames get snuffed out, so a torch is only a brief hiding spot rather than a permanent one. The protected braziers are safe, though, and cannot be extinguished, so staying next to those will keep you alive.
