Capcom brings original Resident Evil trilogy to Steam

Three of Capcom's original survival horror classics are now available on PC via Steam, alongside RPG Breath of Fire IV, all launching with a limited-time 50% discount.

The original Resident Evil, Resident Evil 2, and Resident Evil 3 are all available on Steam today, giving PC players access to the classic versions of the survival horror trilogy for the first time in years. Capcom is also releasing Breath of Fire IV on the platform alongside them.

All four titles launched with a 50% discount that runs until 18:00 BST on 15 April, making it a fairly easy recommendation if you've never played them.

The Steam versions retain the original experiences rather than replacing them with improved visuals so this is fixed-camera tank controls, pre-rendered backgrounds, and all the jank and atmosphere that comes with late-90s Capcom. The releases have been updated to support modern operating systems and controllers, which should sort out the compatibility headaches that have kept older PC versions unplayable for many.

It's worth being clear about what these are, particularly for anyone who found the series through the remakes: the original RE2 and RE3 are very different games to their modern counterparts. Shorter, stranger, and in many ways just as good.

Rounding out the release is Breath of Fire IV, the fourth entry in Capcom's classic RPG series, following protagonist Ryu and a group of allies as they attempt to stop an immortal emperor. It's a welcome addition for RPG fans and one that doesn't get nearly as much attention as the RE titles despite being a genuinely solid game.

All four titles are available now on Steam.
