Resident Evil insider Dusk Golem, who has a strong track record when it comes to Capcom leaks, has confirmed on X that Resident Evil 1 Remake has recently entered full development. The news will excite long-time fans, but Dusk Golem was quick to temper expectations around any kind of near-term release.
According to the insider, Resident Evil 1 Remake only recently began full production, making it anywhere from four to seven years away from release, as Capcom is currently focused on Code Veronica Remake, which is the next main Resident Evil game and Resident Evil 0 Remake, which is deep in development.
He also noted that Resident Evil games get scrapped regularly in early development, meaning nothing is guaranteed at this stage for Resident Evil 1 Remake.
It [Resident Evil 1 Remake] won't be after Zero Remake. Where Zero Remake started development 3-4 years ago, Resident Evil 1 Remake is just recently entering development, so it's likely anywhere from 4-7 years out from releasing, presuming it comes out at all, since it's in early development and Resident Evil games get scrapped all the time," the leaker wrote.
Dusk Golem also offered his theory as to why the planned Mansion section was reportedly cut from Resident Evil Requiem. With Code Veronica Remake confirmed as the next mainline entry, and that game featuring a callback to the original RE1 Mansion, Capcom may have been wary of returning to that location too many times in quick succession.
A Mansion segment in Requiem, followed by another in Code Veronica Remake, and then the full RE1 Remake itself, would risk the iconic setting losing its impact, which certainly makes sense, but whether that's the reason why Capcom left it out of Requiem, we'll probably never know.
Capcom have certainly seen massive success with the Resident Evil remakes and new titles alike over the last several years, so it's expected that the publisher will push even stronger for more remakes and new experiences. The Resident Evil franchise is living its best life in terms of both sales and critical reception, and Resident Evil fans are probably one of the happiest communities out there, thanks to that. As a big fan of the series, I can't wait to play more.
