In honor of the World Water Day, Niantic has launched a Water Festival in the Pokemon Go app, making water and part water type Pokemon spawn more often. Sightings of a shiny Magikarp have been reported as well.
World Water Day represents an annual holiday celebrated on 22 March. Niantic decided to partake in the holiday by hosting a Water Festival. The Festival in Pokemon Go started on 22 March and will end on 29 March.
During this time, "Magikarp, Squirtle, Totodile, and their Evolutions" will spawn more frequently.

Additionally, when exploring near real life bodies of water, a few of the water-type Pokemon originally discovered in the Johto region and even Lapras can be encountered.
Is there a better way to raise awareness of the today's youths about the dangers of not having enough water, than by reminding them that water is the life force of some of their favourite Pokemon?

A new avatar wardrobe item: the Magikarp Hat is also available. The new hat will go perfectly with the first shiny Pokemon to be sighted in the wild of Pokemon Go: the shiny Magikarp.
