Sony is trying out a new sustainability option on the PS5 in a recent beta update. In addition to the normal game mode, users will soon be able to choose a power saver option to reduce the energy demands of supported titles.
The functionality is only available during beta testing at the time of writing, but Sony will enable the option for all supported games when it launches in the full update.
The company is testing out a number of new features in the latest PlayStation 5 beta. In addition to the Power Saver option, DualSense and DualSense Edge controllers will be able to pair with two systems instead of just one. This is mostly a convenience feature that will allow users to switch from PS5 to a PC or mobile device without having to re-pair.
The power saving feature is likely to be the most important quality of life addition in this update, however. The feature is not widely available yet, but we do have a basic understanding of what it will do and its limitations.
How the PS5 Power Saver Mode Works
Sony has confirmed that turning on Power Saver mode will impact the performance of supported games. This could be a reduction in resolution, frame rate, or visual fidelity.
This will only happen for games that are built with support for the Power Saver option, however. If the title does not support it, the mode will have no impact on performance.
The feature also will not impact system performance while outside of games, and does not appear to impact system apps like media, downloads, or system navigation.
This will also limit gameplay features, and will fully disable VR mode. This means PlayStation VR owners will have to leave the feature turned off for full functionality.
Sony’s Environmental Targets
Sony Interactive Entertainment has set a long-term goal to be net-zero in greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. With the Road to Zero plan, it is taking steps to reduce emissions now.
The Power Saver mode allows users to reduce the energy impact of gaming, but does not completely sacrifice performance for energy-conscious gamers.
Sony has not released a list of supported games for this feature, but has said that more information will be released prior to the full update.
Gamers that are interested in using the Power Saver mode should pay attention to the PlayStation Blog and support channels to learn more about game support and specific performance metrics.
