EA’s goal of reaching 100 million players with Battlefield 6 could already be dead due to the rumoured $80 price on consoles.

According to the latest report from trusted leaker bil-bill kun, EA have decided to put a $80 price tag on Battlefield 6, a decision that is already sparking debate among the shooter fans and the Battlefield community.

The Standard Edition is set at €79.99 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, while PC players will pay €69.99. The premium Phantom Edition will cost €109.99 on consoles and €99.99 on PC, with a €29.99 price for those who want to upgrade from Standard Edition at any time.

While price increases for AAA games have become more common in recent years, the console price tag for Battlefield 6 immediately drew criticism from fans online, especially when compared to the goal of reaching 100 million players with the next Battlefield entry, which was reported recently.

“We think there's a huge opportunity to grow the Battlefield franchise and reach new heights,” EA CEO Andrew Wilson said earlier this year, suggesting that the publisher has high (and unrealistic) expectations from the new game.

EA will need to do something really special with Battlefield 6 to reach 100 million players

But at €79.99/$80, players are already questioning how that ambitious number can be hit. The pricing is higher than many other multiplayer-focused shooters on the market, many of which are free-to-play or available through services like Game Pass.

With a full reveal trailer set for July 24, EA will likely need to show strong gameplay and post-launch support to justify the premium price - particularly for console players, who are expected to pay more than PC users across all editions.

A free-to-play battle royale to the rescue

Recent rumours and leaks suggested that Battlefield 6 could launch with a battle royale mode. If the existence of this mode is indeed legit and it happens to be a free-to-play experience akin to Warzone and Fortnite, then Battlefield could attract a large number of players but I seriously doubt it would get close to 50 million, let alone 100.

EA and developer DICE have promised that Battlefield 6 will be a return to form, bringing large-scale warfare, new tech, and a fresh approach after the series' recent failures. But as it stands, the price of admission could keep many would-be soldiers on the sidelines.
