The release of Borderlands 4 is currently two months away, and the series has found itself in another controversy among fans. Unlike the outrage over the release price and stance on discounts, this time Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford is the center of attention, but for all the wrong reasons. The executive spoiled all of the locations of every collectible in the game in an unassuming, publicly accessible social media post.
Borderlands 4 marks the series’ first new open world area set on the planet of Kairos. Early previews of the game reveal that Gearbox and 2K Games are making an effort to bring the title up to speed with the current looter-shooter standard, and the large-scale open world area is expected to be a massive upgrade.
Pitchford uploaded an image of the full world map, complete with all of the location markers for in-game collectibles, such as pearlescent caches and Fast Travel stations.
On the one hand, the post’s intention was meant as a testament to the team’s dedication to world-building, to which Pitchford wrote a love letter in the accompanying text post.
On the other, however, the list of over 200 collectible locations, all of which are Marcus Bobbleheads, have led players to come to their own conclusions regarding spoilers, as this was the post’s most attention-grabbing feature.
While some fans praised the level of detail and insight into the size of the game, other fans have called out the move as spoiling the collection of such items.
Fan Reactions and What’s Next
Borderlands 4 is already one of 2024’s most anticipated games, but it has been accompanied by a few PR blunders over the last couple of months. This includes the recent news that the title will release at a $80 price point in addition to Pitchford’s questionable comments regarding the game never being discounted in the future.
Randy Pitchford has been no stranger to controversies on social media in the past. Borderlands 4 has not even released yet, but the most recent dust-up is spoiling all the locations of the collectibles on the new map, which has been a point of contention in the community weeks before release.
There have been several mixed reactions online, with some players siding with how this could ruin the find of stumbling upon a Marcus Bobblehead at random, while others are excited to plan out their collections.
Borderlands 4 is due out on September 12 for PlayStation, Xbox and PC. A Borderlands 4 Switch 2 version is set to release in 2025, and all of the Marcus bobbleheads will be waiting for players there as well.
