PlayStation 6 development continues, but Sony confirms the console is still years from release. The company is prioritizing PS5 Pro enhancements and AI-driven features.

Gamers may be excitedly anticipating the PlayStation 6, but Sony is letting you know the next-generation console is not happening anytime soon. In an announcement, the company recently revealed that PS6 development is on the right track but warned players not to expect a release for many years.

The tech giant has remained consistent in its messaging when it comes to the next-gen console. During the brief statement, Sony’s executive team reiterated PS6 is in the early development phase, which was a message delivered in early 2023.

Sony has been notoriously quiet about PS6 since then, but speculation has continued to swirl. While the company has consistently released new hardware every 6–7 years, there is no official release window for PS6. Citing the 6–7 year gap between the PS5 and PS4, PS6’s most optimistic estimated release window falls at around 2027.

Sony Makes PS5 Pro A Priority

Sony currently has no plans to announce a release window, instead doubling down on the company’s stated goals of extending the PS5’s lifecycle as long as possible and improving its performance.

In a new interview with Tom’s Guide, Cerny, lead system architect for PlayStation 5, explained Sony is working with AMD to develop and implement AI-powered rendering techniques, such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs), designed to increase the graphic quality of games. He added that these technologies are being designed to improve performance on both current and future hardware.

In lieu of building a PS6, Sony is doubling down on the PS5 Pro. The company is prioritizing the updated model’s development, with a 2026 release window, which will include a new upscaling technology called PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), set to compete against AMD’s FSR 4.

Sony’s ambitious 4K120 and 8K60 performance targets for the PS5 Pro, it seems, will serve as the company’s bridge technology between PS5 and PS6.

Sony Handheld Also Expected to Launch

It also seems Sony is also hard at work on a new handheld device, expected to include 16GB of GDDR5X RAM and its own AI-assisted upscaling feature. Sony hasn’t confirmed any of these details, but it’s becoming clear the company is not looking to abandon its handheld games niche any time soon.

With no concrete signs of the PS6 yet, fans can expect the PS5 family to remain the flagship for PlayStation for many years to come.
