Obsidian Entertainment have released a new sneak peak at Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire. The trailer that popped up today is showing different aspects of the game but takeaways were customisation and ships, including a ship battle.

As you venture with your party through the Deadfire archipelago in Pillars of Eternity 2, you will need to use ships sooner or later. This trailer shows a bit of gameplay that includes staffing your companions on different parts of the ship, and their customisation.

The trailer shows two ships passing near each other on the world map and the start of their subsequent conflict. It plays out as a pen-and-paper battle where you and your opponent take turns, blowing each other's ships to pieces. The game also tracks resources of both ships, such as the crew and cannonballs, and maximum amount of each is decided by the ship's type. Playing in real time continues as soon as one of the ships is boarded, as hinted by the trailer.

Companion customisation and progression are shown in the trailer as well, and they are also decided by the player. In true RPG fashion, skills system seems to be deeper than the ocean itself. Skills shown are separated in two sections - active and passive. Active ones are your standard combat type skills, such as Arcana, Stealth, Explosives and such.

Passive skills include various ways of manipulating the in-game world's population through bluffing, diplomacy, intimidation, street smarts and as it appears, religion as well. Passive skills also include metaphysics and survival, which are likely used for purposes other than pulling a fast one over Deadfire's inhabitants.

With all of the sailing on open seas, it seems to be another addition to the ''pirate era'' that was started recently but unlike the Sea of Thieves, Pillars of Eternity gives you a proper goal that doesn't involve just carrying treasure chests back and forth for no reason at all. As seen at the end of the trailer, you will be hunting a god no less, in order to reclaim your soul.

The game will present you with a few hitches on your soul reclamation, such as boobytrapped dungeons and that fiery-dragon-bird thing. Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire is coming to PC and Mac systems on 8 May 2018, while PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch will be getting the game some time during Q4 2018.
