Gears of War: E-Day has already established itself as Steam’s biggest Gears game yet, based on player numbers. The upcoming prequel entered Early Access on October 1 for owners of the game’s Premium Edition and for qualifying Game Pass subscribers, letting folks experience Emergence Day ahead of schedule. Over on SteamDB, it’s reported that E-Day hit 20,374 concurrent players on Steam this past October 2.
20k concurrent players on Steam is impressive enough, but it also more than doubles the player peak reached by Gears 5, which stands as the previous highest-peaking Gears game on Steam with 10,196 players.
By that metric, E-Day has already managed to snag Steam’s highest Gears player count, despite its full release still being days away.
Granted, it’s important to note that we’re strictly talking about Steam player numbers here. E-Day is available on Xbox Series X|S and PC via Microsoft’s game ecosystem as well, and will eventually launch on PlayStation 5 too, so this Steam figure doesn’t represent its total player count.
We will say that though: E-Day has its worldwide release just days away, on October 6. As such, it’ll be interesting to see how much higher player numbers can go once everyone can access the game.
Still, it’s pretty wild that it’s reached this number ahead of launch. Early reviews have been mostly positive though not without their criticisms, and players on the Steam page are currently rating it Very Positive as well. Reviews have been pleased with E-Day’s modernised take on movement and Gears’ signature weighty gunplay.
E-Day sees players thrown into the beginning of the Locust War, with a young Marcus Fenix facing off against the alien enemy on Emergence Day years before the events of the original trilogy. Along with its usual cover shooting, E-Day modernises the formula with smoother movement, interactive environments, and new multiplayer features.
