Korean publisher NCSOFT surprised attendees at G-Star 2025 today with Horizon Steel Frontiers, a full-fledged MMORPG adaptation of PlayStation's acclaimed Horizon franchise. Developed in collaboration with Guerrilla Games, the title aims to bring machine-hunting action to mobile devices (iOS and Android) and PC whilst notably skipping PlayStation 5.
What We Know About Horizon Steel Frontiers
Set in the Deadlands, which is a new region within the Horizon universe, Steel Frontiers aims to translate the series' signature combat into MMORPG systems. The debut trailer showcases mechanical creatures and large-scale battles that visually match the mainline Horizon games' impressive presentation, though how this translates to mobile hardware remains uncertain.
NCSOFT promises deeply customisable combat and extensive player freedom, building on Horizon's machine-hunting gameplay whilst introducing persistent online world mechanics. The game launches exclusively on mobile platforms and PC via PURPLE, NCSOFT's proprietary gaming platform, with cross-platform functionality between both versions.
I have to say that the PC storefront exclusivity certainly won't help the game in the long run, as PC players usually prefer to play on Steam. I think we'll see this one on Valve's platform soon after launch.
No PlayStation 5 Release Announced
The absence of a PS5 version is peculiar, given Horizon's PlayStation heritage. Guerrilla's Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West remain PlayStation console exclusives (later ported to PC), making this mobile and PC-first approach an unexpected strategic shift for Sony Interactive Entertainment's IP.
The decision to partner with NCSOFT rather than develop internally or with established Western MMO studios suggests Sony value NCSOFT's mobile expertise and want to go for the large Asian market, where MMOs usually flourish. Whether PlayStation console versions eventually materialise remains unclear.
Timing and Industry Context
The announcement arrives shortly after Sony took legal action against Tencent over the controversial survival crafting title Light of Motiram that allegedly appropriates Horizon's distinctive mechanical creature designs and aesthetic. Given Horizon Steel Frontiers' stunning visuals closely matching the mainline games' signature look, Sony's protective stance over the IP's visual identity makes considerably more sense in hindsight.
What's Next
NCSOFT say Additional details will be released gradually through the official Horizon Steel Frontiers website. No release window has been announced, suggesting it may take a while before we get to play, though. I do have to say that the gameplay looks pretty decent and polished so the game may not be that far away after all.
