A teaser for the new Mass Effect game aired last night in celebration of N7 Day. The teaser trailer was released in three short parts, showing a mysterious person wearing the iconic N7 jacket.
Obviously, this sent Mass Effect fans into a frenzy as they have been waiting for news about the next Mass Effect game for many years. And while the game is indeed in development at Bioware, and could even be properly announced at The Game Awards 2023, it won't be coming anytime soon, according to reliable Jeff Grubb.
Grubb posted on social media X that he'll talk more about Mass Effect on his Game Mess show but added that the game "is super far away still".
This should come as a major surprise to Mass Effect fans since Bioware are yet to properly reveal the game. We only have this vague teaser and a confirmation via blog that the team is working on a new Mass Effect and that's pretty much it.
Some job listings suggested that Mass Effect 5 could ditch EA's proprietary Frostbite engine for Unreal Engine 5. According to some reports, Mass Effect Andromeda development suffered due to Frostbite not being optimised for narrative-driven RPG games such as Mass Effect.
All in all, we hope to see more of Mass Effect 5 soon, potentially at The Game Awards 2023 next month. A short in-engine trailer to introduce us to some characters, locations and the plot would certainly be great. Fingers crossed!
In case you're not familiar with the Mass Effect series, this space opera is one of the most successful EA franchises. The trilogy is considered by many as the greatest RPG series of all time but sadly, the follow-up game called Andromeda became a laughing stock due to various bugs, poor storyline and writing, uninteresting characters and overall, bad design.
Whether or not Bioware can make something special out of the Mass Effect franchise again, it remains to be seen.
