While PlayStation is raking in money through the popularity of exclusives built on great narrative designs, it appears that Microsoft will go the opposite way with Xbox.
The company announced it will partner up with Inworld AI to employ generative AI models for character development and narrative tools that will, at least to some extent, create the stories on their own.
Considering that non-organic content creation was not necessarily artistic thus far, this is a pretty bold move.
According to the announcement, the partnership will result in Azure OpenAI cloud-based solutions mixing it up with Inworld's generative AI models which should, in theory, result in stories that are supposed to measure up to what the rest of the industry has to offer.
Some of the highlights of the new toolset are an "AI design copilot" which can turn prompts into detailed scripts, dialogue trees and more as well as "AI character runtime engine" which promises dynamically generated stories, quests and dialogue.
There is no mention of which projects will be covered by the new partnership or when it will kick into gear, it is quite possible players will notice generic dialogue and storytelling just fine.
After all, such things have happened in the past where procedural generation and AI tools didn't manage to impress the audience, especially when you can compare the results to organically made stories that cause the player to become invested in a game.
