Marvel Rivals stands out as one of the most anticipated game releases of 2024, particularly for Marvel enthusiasts. Often likened to an Overwatch-style hero shooter set in the Marvel universe, it has garnered considerable attention. Despite limited gameplay footage from NetEase and Marvel since its announcement several months ago, there's confirmation of over a dozen Marvel heroes and villains expected at launch.
Recently, NetEase conducted a closed beta test for Marvel Rivals, granting a select group of players the chance to experience the game and explore the functionalities of different heroes. As one group of players focused on testing Marvel Rivals, some have turned their attention to exploring various aspects beyond gameplay, particularly by datamining the game files.
Recently, a substantial Marvel Rivals leak unveiled 20 new characters and five previously undisclosed maps. With these additions, the roster now boasts 39 characters, a number that may seem ambitious for launch. However, dataminers also unearthed information regarding the game's release and the platforms where fans can anticipate playing it.
What did the recent Marvel Rivals datamine reveal?
During the Alpha Test phase of Marvel Rivals, dataminers meticulously combed through the game files in hopes of uncovering undisclosed details. Notably, Twitter user GMatrixGames spotted a section labeled "TargetPlatforms" within the alpha code, listing both the Xbox Series X and PS5, platforms not officially confirmed by developer NetEase.
Moreover, there are code references to the Microsoft and PlayStation Stores, suggesting players may purchase in-game currency, aligning with Marvel Rivals' online nature. Even though Marvel Rivals was initially revealed for PC only, NetEase has hinted at exploring potential releases on other platforms.
However, nothing is confirmed, another reputable dataminer named Miller Ross, known for confirming details on games like Marvel's Avengers and Suicide Squad, chimed in, suggesting that crossplay infrastructure is present in the code, fueling speculation of an imminent announcement, possibly during upcoming showcases like Summer Games Fest in June.
While the prospect of additional platforms may excite fans if proven true, Marvel Rivals faced criticism during the Closed Alpha. A "non-disparagement" clause in the contract prohibited players from making negative remarks or comparisons to other games, with breaches risking contract termination.
Following exposure online, Marvel Rivals issued an apology, pledging to revise the contract terms to encourage constructive discussion and utilize feedback, both positive and critical, to enhance the game.
