After almost 16 years with 343 Industries and two years with Bungie, Halo art director Glenn Israel has announced his departure from the Halo franchise. In a heartfelt message shared on LinkedIn, Israel revealed that he’s officially stepping away from the Halo universe after 17 years, hinting that he plans to share the full story behind his exit sometime next year.
“As of today and after seventeen long years, I am officially no longer contributing to the Halo universe,” Israel wrote. “There is little more I can say for the moment, though I intend to share this particular story in its entirety when it is absolutely safe to do so next year.”
While he didn’t go into details, Israel included a strong message aimed at those working in the gaming industry. He reminded fellow developers to prioritise their wellbeing and integrity amid what he described as a difficult time for the industry.
“No illusion of security nor promise of wealth or fame or power is worth trading away your health, your dignity, your ethics or values,” Israel wrote, urging his peers to “stay strong” and “find where you belong.”
Israel’s departure comes during a turbulent period for 343 Industries. Earlier this year, the studio underwent major layoffs and Microsoft has since rebranded the developer as “Halo Studios”, signalling a shift in leadership and creative direction.
The combination of restructuring, layoffs, and now the exit of long-serving veterans like Israel raises growing concerns about stability within the Halo franchise. While Halo Studios will continue to support Halo Infinite and work on future projects like the rumoured Halo CE Remake, fans and industry watchers alike have expressed unease about the company’s long-term vision.
Israel’s decision to step away after nearly two decades and his promise to share more when it’s “safe to do so” adds to that uncertainty, hinting that there may be deeper issues behind the scenes at one of Xbox’s most important studios.
