LCK is getting a few changes to the playoffs this season, which now has a start and end date as well.
League of Legends Championship Korea (LCK) Spring Split 2023 will start on January 18, 2023, and will wrap up two months later, on March 19.
When the regular league matches are done, the top six teams will proceed to the playoffs, where a few format changes will be present but it will still be a bit different from other regional playoffs supported by Riot Games .
The essence of the competition will remain the same but the viewers will be treated to more matches as double elimination format takes place.
Previously, out of the six teams in the playoffs, the top two from the regular season would get to the semifinals immediately while the bottom four would duke it out in the quarterfinals.
With Spring 2023, the top two teams will only get a pass to Round 2 while the bottom four teams fight in Round 1. The winners from Round 2 go to the upper bracket while the losers get knocked down to lower bracket.
After that, the winners of the upper bracket proceed to the finals while the losers get knocked down to lower bracket where they will face the team that survived the previous round. In other words, the semifinals will no longer exist as such - the first finalist is decided in the first upper bracket match while the second finalist comes from the second lower bracket match.
In total, the fans will be treated to eight BO5 matches instead of just five, which we've seen in the previous seasons. Let's hope it doesn't become too taxing on the players.
