Mini-reworks are the answer Riot have found when it comes to modernizing older LoL champions. Season 11 was filled with this practice, and it seems that season 12 will be as well.
Ever since the funneling Master Yi plus Taric strategy was nerfed, the champion has seen an incredible decrease in his presence in high elo, while his pick and ban rate in low elo has not decreased at all. The reason being that his Duskblade lethality build is relatively easy to counter if you know what you're doing.
However, Riot don't like the assassin route Master Yi is being taken in, and are making changes to his kit to combat this, and make the champion viable in higher elo as well.
His Alpha Strike ability now has far different scaling compared to before:
- Damage changed from 25/60/95/130/165 +90% AD), reduced by 75% for subsequent hits on the same target to 30/60/90/120/150 (+65% AD), reduced by 75% for subsequent hits on the same target,
- Crits deal 60% (+Bonus Crit Damage%) extra damage to 50% (+Bonus Crit Damage%) extra damage,
- Now applies on-hit effects, while on-hits from subsequent hits are also reduced,
- The cooldown refund now scales down with Ability Haste.
His Meditate and Highlander abilities, the W and Ultimate respectively, can now be cast during his Alpha Strike animation, for more expressive mechanical plays.
What the changes to his Q ability represent, however, is that Riot are forcing Yi back onto the road he was designed for, namely that of an auto-attacking fighter, rather than a disappearing assassin. It remains to be seen whether or not this will be a wise course of action, or if we will have a repeat of AP Master Yi.
