Vanguard, Riot's proprietary anti-cheat system integral to the Valorant launch, operates at the kernel level. It's anti-cheat mechanism is similar to that of other popular multiplayer games.
However, there have been prior allegations from players asserting Vanguard's spyware-like characteristics due to its extensive access to computer systems.
Riot has previously refuted such claims and, following an initial delay, integrated the anti-cheat into League of Legends with patch 14.9 on May 1st.
Following its implementation, several players have taken to social media platforms and Reddit, complaining that the anti-cheat is causing computer malfunctions or interfering with internal operations.
How is the community reacting to Vanguard?
The community is surely having mixed feelings about this. While LoL players who are already playing Valorant are totally fine with Vanguard, a substantial number of players are otherwise outraged and concerned about their privacy.
Nick ‘LS’ De Cesare, a popular League of Legends content creator, posted on X (formerly Twitter) that a new update "bricked" two of his computers and advised players to be wary of the "Vanguard update."
Later, he shared an update, mentioning that he was able to fix one of his PCs but that the other was still non-functional.
Riot's senior anti-cheat analyst Matt ‘K30’ Paoletti responded to claims, suggesting that technical problems with the patch were linked to Vanguard. He clarified that Vanguard is unlikely to be the cause of problems like these.
The Riot representative also mentioned that the company intends to release a comprehensive report on Vanguard's launch in the upcoming weeks or months.
