Konami have revealed the full contents of Contra Anniversary Collection, showing that there are kind of more titles in it than originally expected. Then again, this could be attributed to regulation-induced reskins of existing games.

Contra Anniversary Collection will have 10 games, even though the teaser on the official site showed four games in addition to four unrevealed ones. The full list is as follows:

  • Contra (Arcade)
  • Contra (NES)
  • Contra (Famicom)
  • Super Contra (Arcade)
  • Super C (NES)
  • Contra III: The Alien Wars (SNES)
  • Super Probotector: Alien Rebels (SNES)
  • Contra: Hard Corps (Sega Genesis)
  • Probotector (Sega Mega Drive)
  • Operation C (Game Boy)

There are 10 games on that , although some are nearly identical. For example, the first three titles are basically the same game. NES and Arcade versions are and some minor map and enemy changes but the similarities are undisputable - it is a port of the same game after all. On the other hand, NES and Famicom versions are pretty much the same.

The same differences apply for Super Contra from the Arcade and Super C on NES. Contra III: The Alien Wars and Super Probotector: Alien Rebels, however, are probably the most interesting of the clone bunch.

Both games were released for the same platform, SNES, but the latter was reskinned and renamed in order to circumvent European regulations. We got one of the worst puns in gaming history thanks to that.

If you didn't catch it by now, Probotector is a mashup of "protector" and "robot" which is a pun so bad that its name was probably the inspiration for an equally bad Red Faction Guerrilla Re-Mars-tered. For clarity, both games are good, I'm just bashing the poor naming sense.

To make matters slightly more confusing for the uninitiated, Probotector for Sega Mega Drive is not another copy of Contra III / Super Probotector though. It is a copy of Contra: Hard Corps from Sega Genesis. This game has arguably the best boss fights that would put many modern-day developers to shame for being creatively bankrupt, compared to a game released 25 years ago.

Unfortunately, Contra Force, which was the first game in the series to have four distinctive playable characters has been left out.

Contra Anniversary Collection will be available on PC via Steam, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch during Summer 2019 with the $20 price tag.
