Earlier this week, we got a report stating that EA have cancelled an unannounced shooter from their Respawn studio. Many fans immediately started to speculate that this could be a new Titanfall game, which would certainly be devastating news if that turned out to be true given how everyone seems to want more games in Respawn's sci-fi franchise.
But, it seems this project was not Titanfall 3. According to the reliable games industry insider Jeff Grubb, the cancelled game was from the team behind Star Wars games, not Titanfall. Grubb explained that the team tried to shift to something else after the cancelled Star Wars shooter game and potentially use the assets they've created, but that new project was cancelled too and it was not Titanfall 3.
"It is the team that was making that Star Wars first-person shooter. That was not Titanfall," Grubb said.
Grubb added that Respawn have a new project in the works, led by Steve Fukuda, the Director of Titanfall, but this one is in prototyping phase and still years away.
But Grubb again seem to reiterate that even this project is not Titanfall. He pretty adamantly said Respawn is not currently working on a Titanfall game. "They are not making a Titanfall game, so if people were looking for good news, there, it's not exactly the good news."
At the moment, Respawn are working on the third Star Wars Jedi game, Apex Legends updates and an external Star Wars tactics game project, according to Grubb.
It's certainly disappointing that Respawn seemingly don't have the resources nor time to create a new Titanfall game but I can understand their reluctance. The market is oversaturated with first-person shooters, Call of Duty is as strong as it's ever been and Battlefield is also planning a big comeback.
It would take something really special to dethrone all these shooters, which is probably why Respawn don't think Titanfall 3 isn't worth the risk.
