One of the enigmas from the first Guild Wars that never revealed its secrets is ready to do so in Guild Wars 2 during the Summer of 2023.

Guild Wars 2: Secrets of the Obscure expansion release date is set for August 22, 2023.

ArenaNet and NCSoft announced that this expansion will bring new gameplay features and take us to the Wizard's Tower, the floating island castle that has been teasing us for almost 20 years now.

The structure has been present in the earliest days of the first Guild Wars and anyone who ventured to put an end to the villainy of Galrath kept wondering what secrets it might hold.

We will find out in less than two months of publishing this article and while it doesn't seem like we are getting new Elite specialisations but there is an exciting twist coming with the Weaponmaster Training.

It will allow us to wield weapons that are reserved for the Elite specialisations in our professions without actually equipping them. For example, you could have a core Guardian wielding two swords or a core warrior with a pistol.

Some of the selling points for the expansion include:

  • Two new maps, third on the way
  • Wizard's Tower serves as a hub area
  • New enemy type, Kryptis
  • Astral Ward, a new order that fights Kryptis
  • Upgradeable Heart of the Obscure stone, which opens more content
  • Easier Skyscale training, special reward for those who go with the old path as well
  • Weaponmaster Training
  • Wizard's Vault with rewards for daily, weekly and seasonal achievements
  • Two new Strike missions
  • Relic system that streamlines builds with runes
  • New rewards, including legendary armour earned through open-world PvE

Standard Edition will set you back £22, Deluxe Edition will cost £44 and include a new raptor skin, one emote, a character slot and an Identity Repair Kit. Obscure Ultimate Edition will cost £65 with items from the previous editions as well as 4,000 Gems.

All subsequently released content will be free of charge, as per usual.
