We've known for quite a while that Sucker Punch Productions have been busy working on the next Ghost of Tsushima game and last night at State of Play, Sony have finally confirmed that the game titled Ghost of Yōtei is indeed coming.
Ghost of Yōtei is not a direct sequel to Ghost of Tsushima since it's set over 300 years after Jin's adventure. Speaking about Jin Sakai, he's obviously not part of this game since the main protagonist is now a female called Atsu and that's already causing some hot takes online.
Sucker Punch Productions explained their decision in the official blog post, where they stated that they simply wanted to tell a different story and explore a different part of Japan. Here's their comment:
"We wanted to continue to innovate. To create something fresh but familiar, we looked beyond Jin Sakai’s story and the island of Tsushima, and shifted our focus to the idea of the Ghost instead. At Sucker Punch we love origin stories, and we wanted to explore what it could mean to have a new hero wearing a Ghost mask, and uncovering a new legend. This led us to Ghost of Yōtei: a new protagonist, a new story to unfold, and a new region of Japan to explore."
The game is set in 1603 and will take place in the lands surrounding Mount Yōte in the heart of Ezoarea which is today known as Hokkaido. Judging by the trailer, the game will look absolutely stunning and has a massive open world to explore, similar to its predecessor.
Ghost of Yōtei will obviously launch first on the PlayStation 5 console sometime in 2025. We'd bet a PC port is also planned sometime at a later date, a year or two after the PS5 launch.
