A Louisiana-based company, Stellarblade LLC, has filed a lawsuit against Sony for the PlayStation 5 exclusive game Stellar Blade, citing that the name of the game is too similar in name to their own nostalgically titled game, which may cost Sony a pretty penny in financial loss.
A lawsuit against both Sony and South Korean game developer Shift Up, makers of Stellar Blade, had been filed earlier this month in the United States.
The complaint is brought by Stellarblade LLC, a company previously known as Stellarblade Limited Liability Company since 2010, dealing in multimedia entertainment, film, documentaries, promotional content, and music video production.
In this regard, the company mentions that the title of the game resulted in confusion among the clients of the company, as it complicates their search for information about the business.
Stellarblade LLC claims to have reached out to Shift Up over the last year, requesting that it change the name of the game due to trademark reasons, to which the latter turned a blind eye.
This has taken the company to the court of law and to demand some extreme measures. It's urging the court to ban Sony from continuing with the Stellar Blade title, with demands that the publisher "collect and destroy all materials relating to the presently named game".
So far, Sony has yet to publicly comment on the suit, and it remains to be seen how it might impact the release and distribution of Stellar Blade. The result could end up hitting Sony with a pretty significant effect, given that the game is one of its planned PlayStation 5 exclusives for this year.
