GameScience has officially announced Black Myth: Zhong Kui, the second title in its growing Black Myth series. Built on Unreal Engine 5, the single-player action role-playing game is rooted in ancient Chinese mythology and inspired by the classic tale Zhong Kui Banishing Evil.
The studio unveiled the project with its first CG trailer, marking the official start of development, but has made it pretty clear that the project is "little more than an empty folder at this stage". A release date is yet to be confirmed, but GameScience say the game is coming to "PC and all mainstream console platforms". Some insiders seem to suggest we will be waiting until 2028 for Black Myth: Zhong Kui.
Much like Black Myth: Wukong, the upcoming title aims to deliver a distinctive RPG experience, blending mythological storytelling, intense combat, and atmospheric worldbuilding.
GameScience describes the project as both a continuation and an evolution of its vision, promising to introduce “fresh ideas and necessary changes” to address past shortcomings while pushing the limits of gameplay and design.
The Legend of Zhong Kui
The game draws on the legendary figure Zhong Kui, a mythological demon hunter whose story first appeared in Tang Yishi (Unofficial History of the Tang Dynasty). Later chronicled by scholar Shen Kuo in the Dream Pool Essays, Zhong Kui is said to have taken his own life after failing the imperial examination. Grateful for the recognition he received even in death, he swore to rid the world of harmful spirits known as Xuhao.
One of the most famous legends tells of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, who dreamt of a ghost stealing his belongings. Zhong Kui appeared, captured the spectre, and devoured its eyes, an act that cured the emperor’s illness. From then on, images of Zhong Kui became symbols of protection, often placed on doors during the New Year to ward off evil.
