From Software have today released Update 1.09 for Elden Ring, which brings ray-traced ambient occlusion and ray-traced shadows to PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Elden Ring patch 1.09 is now live on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S platforms, bringing several improvements, and bug fixes but also new features. The patch size varies so it's around 5 GB on PlayStation 5 while on PC, it's only 200 MB.
Certainly, the biggest highlight of this new Elden Ring patch that From Software dropped today is the ray-tracing implementation. You can now enable ray-traced ambient occlusion and ray-traced shadows in the game's settings.
Sadly, other than a severe hit to performance, you probably won't notice much difference as the ray-tracing implementation isn't quite great. Twitter user Lance McDonald shared some screenshots , which show pretty much no difference.
Apparently, the indoor shadows didn't see much improvement as the ray-tracing update mostly adds vegetation shadows in the world. The performance also reportedly takes a big hit, which is somewhat expected without DLSS or AMD FSR 2.
From Software recommends NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti, 8 GB or AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT, 16 GB to have a proper gameplay experience with ray-tracing turned on.
Whether From Software improve the ray-tracing features in Elden Ring in future patches it remains to be seen. It is possible that we may get a more robust ray-tracing implementation with the Elden Ring expansion Shadow of the Erdtree, which is coming soon.
As for the other things in the patch, there is plenty of balancing changes, Ashes of War adjustments and bug fixes. You can check out the full patch notes on Bandai Namco's official website.
