To celebrate the release of The Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree, From Software have released a launch trailer for their highly anticipated expansion, in which, we got to see some interesting new bosses and one that is heavily reminiscent of the tyrant Pontiff Sulyvahn, who souls fans will know as one of the bosses in Dark Souls 3.
Pontiff Sulyvahn is, hands down, one of the cruellest characters in the Dark Souls universe but leaving that aside, he's also one of the most challenging bosses in Dark Souls 3 for many, many players including yours truly (albeit, I did beat him on my second try during my NG+ run).
I'd say that the entire area of Irithyll of the Boreal Valley and the Pontiff boss fight is the first proper skill check in Dark Souls 3 where many players gave up as the difficulty spike is a bit too much.
Now in Elden Ring expansion, it appears that we have a variant of Pontiff and the new launch trailer gives us a glimpse of this new boss which wields two swords and yes, as you've seen in the image above, swords are coated in flames and what appears to be blue magic, which is an obvious nod to Pontiff's two swords which have the same coatings.
For those who are not familiar with Pontiff, he can be a very challenging boss if you don't know how to approach this fight. Basically, Pontiff can be easily parried, which can make this boss fight a much easier encounter so keep this in mind when you pay a visit to the Elden Ring's version of this slaver.
While I doubt From Software will do the same thing and make this new boss completely identical to Pontiff, it's possible that the moveset shares some similarities. In addition, I'd bet that From Software included some cheeky punishment for all the players who go into this battle expecting a copy-pasted Pontiff so make sure to observe his moves first until you learn the patterns and only then attack.
