Apex Legends made its debut on the live-service gaming scene in 2019 courtesy of Respawn Entertainment, the minds behind Titanfall. Despite its modest debut, the game swiftly gained traction due to its accessible free-to-play model, rapid gameplay, strategic complexity, and memorable character roster.
Sustaining a live-service game hinges on consistent content updates, an area where Respawn has largely excelled. Currently, in its 21st season, Apex Legends shows no signs of slowing down.
In EA's Q4 and 2024 fiscal year earnings call, it was revealed that Apex Legends has generated $3.4 billion in net bookings since its February 2019 launch. This information surfaced within the comprehensive document detailing the earnings call proceedings.
What has EA revealed so far?
EA CEO Andrew Wilson said, "Since its unexpected, breakout release in 2019, the high-definition title Apex Legends has surpassed $3.4 billion in total net bookings."
For those who might not be familiar, net bookings refer to revenue earned after deducting any expenses or fees. It's not equivalent to $3.4 billion in pure profit, but the fact that a free-to-play game's in-game cosmetics have generated such substantial revenue in just over five years is remarkable.
Wilson further discussed some of the changes EA focused on in fiscal year 2024 to position Apex Legends for "future revenue growth."
He continued, "For instance, we concluded the year with significant alterations to the mechanics of our popular Ranked Mode.""We actively engaged with the community, increased transparency, and carefully addressed their feedback, resulting in significant improvements in player sentiment scores globally."
Ranked mode in Apex Legends has been a contentious topic within the community, with Respawn continually adjusting elements of the game mode each season.
However, Ranked has consistently faced challenges since its inception, with notable figures in the Apex community, such as professional player Imperial Hal, highlighting issues like the prevalence of teamers and cheaters throughout Season 20.
To wrap up the Apex Legends segment of the call, Wilson stated: "Looking ahead, we will continue investing in broadening the audience by further developing the rich characters of this universe, extending beyond the current Battle Royale format."
