With Dynasty Warriors: Origins, Koei Tecmo goes back to the series' roots by placing tactical action back into the central role of proceedings-a feature which has somewhat strayed within the more recent series entries.
Speaking recently with The Gamer, series producer Tomohiko Sho gave some context about the route Omega Force took in trying to reclaim those core strategic combat elements revolving around the original series.
Sho recalled how, once Dynasty Warriors 9 had launched, the team engaged in deep discussions about the future of the series.
They wanted to bring back a more tactical type of gameplay that defined earlier titles within the series, such as Dynasty Warriors 2, somewhat lost in the action approach taken by recent games. "We felt that over the last ten years, the tactical aspect had been pushed aside. Our goal with Dynasty Warriors: Origins was bring it back to prominence," Sho said.
While the return to tactical gameplay is a big point of focus, Sho would go on to make crystal clear that the scale of battles in Origins would not suffer because of this.
In fact, if anything, the team has been able to pull off some large-scale and immersive battlefields thanks to the power of the current generation of consoles and PCs.
He reiterated that such massive on-screen battles with thousands upon thousands of soldiers at once, are only made possible with today's advanced hardware.
He also acknowledged the development team, especially for the programmers who had to work extra hard in order to render up to 10,000 soldiers on-screen all at once. "Tough it was, but they pulled it off," Sho said.
He further added that the evolution in game consoles, from PlayStation 2 to PlayStation 5, has finally let them bring a vision they had since the early days of the series for how large-scale battles should look and feel.
Dynasty Warriors: Origins is set to launch on January 17, 2025, for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
