Call of Duty Black Ops 6 will be the first ever Call of Duty game to launch on day one on Xbox Game Pass. Following today's official live-action reveal trailer, Microsoft revealed on the Xbox blog that Treyarch's new title will be available on Game Pass for PC, consoles and cloud the same day it launches later this year.
The game will be available on PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Obviously, players on Sony's platform will have to buy the game at full price to play on launch day or wait for a discount later on.
Microsoft actually spoiled the big surprise earlier today by sending premature push notifications via the Xbox app on iOS and Android devices. The notification stated, "Call of Duty Black Ops 6 is coming to Game Pass on day one later this year".
Putting Call of Duty on Game Pass day one is certainly a bold move by Microsoft who are going all in on their subscription service and it will be interesting to see if it pays off in the long run.
It will almost certainly result in a drop in overall sales but if an increase in Game Pass subscribers and Xbox Series X|S console sales compensate for that, I think Microsoft will surely think of it as a successful move.
On top of this, Microsoft are surely counting on massive player engagement and a boost in monthly active users which can result in increased in-game purchases and Call of Duty is traditionally jam-packed with those.
Some recent rumours suggested that Microsoft have been discussing internally whether or not they should put Call of Duty on Game Pass. It certainly was not an easy decision as pros and cons of both ways are strong but I'm glad to see
A proper look at Call of Duty Black Ops 6 is scheduled for a deep dive that will follow after Xbox Games Showcase on June 9 so tune in then if you're excited to see the first gameplay of Treyarch's Gulf War-inspired video game.
