Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 player going by the Reddit name of DukeNZ posted a video where his standoff with another player resulted in his death, even though he should've won by the looks of it. Treyarch delivered a lengthy response.
At first glance, you're likely to see what everyone did - the guy landed five shots, where's his kill? Treyarch said that they initially suspected a bug as well, since five shots should've been enough to send the other guy to Reddit crying.
However, upon closer inspection and a whole lotta video scrubbing, Treyarch figured it out. "[We] went through it again and caught something on the very first shot that is extremely unlikely, accounts for this issue, and gave us a bit of a laugh", they wrote.
It turns out that DukeNZ's first shot was fired during his transition from hipfire to aiming down sights. This, in turn, meant that the hipspread modifier was still active, which made the shot "go wild", but nevertheless - it still hit. So what gives?
Treyarch said the shot perplexed the Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 team because not only was the blood impact difficult to see - it did less than 25 damage. For a gun that's supposed to do more than 25 damage per shot, this was a real pickle.
And then it dawned on them - the only way this could've happened is if a bullet penetrated a hard surface before it connected, which would drop its damage by just enough to require 6 shots. Lo and behold, further analysis revealed that's exactly what happened, with the first bullet actually clipping the stairs and landing on the other Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 player's leg.
Many users were simply delighted with Treyarch's response and the love story is mutual - the company stressed that videos are greatly appreciated, especially those regarding hit detection issues, as they help them with closer inspection and pinpointing of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4's issues that "are tough to track down given everyone's different network conditions".
